About this opportunity:

We are a very busy boarding kennels with a dog rescue charity sharing the site. We look after dogs, cats and small mammals for private customers, stray dogs for several councils and any type of pet for Social Services clients or in welfare seizures. We deal with animals of all temperaments and size and care for many health issues. No day is ever dull and there is the capacity to learn about a huge range of pat welfare and care. The days are long and all weather and the work requires a good level of fitness and reliability.

Duties to include, but may not be limited to:

  • Cleaning kennels, cat pens and possibly small animal housing to a high standard, including choice and use of disinfectants and tools. Discussing suitable food and feeding bowls. Basic nutritional requirements. Will include washing up
  • Exercising dogs of all sizes on the lead and through play. Playing with cats and providing means of encouraging activity
  • Learning to bath dogs properly, groom out varying length coats and dry correctly. Will include medical shampoos and the reasons for using different shampoos
  • Learning how to worm, flea treat and give other medication safely and correctly. Help with vet visits and preparing dogs for operations, plus aftercare
  • Learning how to carry out thorough health checks on dogs and cats, including recording all findings
  • Dog training and behaviour work, both inside and outside the dog’s kennel. Includes enrichment, lead choices, planning future steps to be taken, selecting suitable rewards and more. Helping with assessments of rescue dogs to prepare them for homing
  • Helping ensure all tools and materials are stored and maintained correctly, so lots of putting things away
  • Possibly basic maintenance such as painting, grass control, rodent prevention
  • Suitable apprentices may also be involved in client interaction and assisting

Future prospects

  • There may be a position available at the kennels at the end of a successful apprenticeship, but, if not, this should really be a good starting point and references are always available to help
