About this opportunity:

Strength and Learning Through Horses is an equine therapy charity working with young people age 5 – 25 from all over London and Hertfordshire who are struggling with mental health challenges, emotional and behavioural problems and / or learning difficulties. We provide equine assisted therapy services and alternative education programmes which involve working with horses on the ground, teaching young people about horse psychology and behaviour. The staff team encourage young people to transfer the learnings about horse behaviour to think their own emotions and behaviour and make positive changes which improve their life chances. We have a friendly staff team of 20 (mostly part time) staff, our staff are a combination of Equine Behaviour Experts and Mental Health experts as well as yard staff and youthwork trained staff. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a friendly, hard-working team. Within the role the successful candidate will be working toward a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Horse Care with further training and employment available for the right candidate

We are currently recruiting for an enthusiastic and dedicated Apprentice who is looking to further their knowledge and skills. The successful candidate will work alongside our current team handling and caring for our equine assisted therapy horses.
As an organisation we are dedicated to providing opportunities for those from disadvantaged backgrounds to access horses and so we welcome applications from those without a lot; or any of previous experience with horses where the candidate can demonstrate to us that they are committed to learning and developing.
Working with a professional staff team of equestrian professionals from varied backgrounds, the training will give a good foundation to go on and work in any equestrian sphere. There is the opportunity to receive targeted training in equine psychology, groundwork training as well as equine assisted therapy and equine assisted learning.
A high standard of care and attention to detail will be expected to maintain the company image we pride ourselves on.

Yard Duties will include but not limited to:

  • Mucking out stables
  • Turning out and bringing in horses
  •  Feeding, watering and haying
  • Grooming
  • Clipping and trimming
  • Maintaining the cleanliness of the yard at all times
  • Bandaging
  • Tacking up
  • Lunging/long reining
  • Riding opportunities if wanted

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a friendly, hard-working team. Within the role the successful candidate will be working toward a Level 2 Equine apprenticeship with further training and employment available for the right candidate.

  • Applicants will ideally have had some experience of handling horses and show this on application. Where there is no experience we would look for a compelling explanation as to why the person would like to apply for this role

Desired qualifications

  • No previous qualifications necessary, the priority for the placement is to offer it to someone with a real drive to work in the equestrian industry.
  • Applicants MUST NOT already hold a level 2 or higher in Horse Care.

Future prospects

  • Progression onto level 3 for the right candidate.

Training

  • Full training to be provided by the employer and KEITS at the place of employment.
  • The applicant will be working towards and gain a Level 2 Equine Groom Apprenticeship.
  • The learner will be allocated an industry specific training consultant who will provide both remote and on site visits throughout the apprenticeship.

  • There is no accommodation on site, own transport would be desirable but not a prerequisite, we are happy to discuss how we can help with transport for the right candidate via a transport fund and / or provision of an electric bicycle or similar transport.
