Sadly, just before Christmas, we lost one of our former KEITS learners, Matthew. His passing came as a huge shock to our team, especially his assessors, Anni and Andrea and is a devastating loss to everyone who knew and loved him. Our thoughts remain with his family, friends, and all those affected.
In the wake of this tragedy, it has been incredibly moving to see the strength and compassion shown by those closest to Matthew. One of our alumni apprentices, Harry, who was not only a colleague but a close friend, has been raising funds in Matthew’s memory for a local men’s mental health group, Check Mate. So far, he has raised nearly £2,500; an amazing achievement for such an important cause.
Last week, around 33 people, including members of the KEITS team, came together to take part in a 14-mile coastal walk from Robin Hood’s Bay to Whitby. The route, known for its breathtaking beauty, also holds a deeper significance, as it is a place touched by loss for many families. It was a day filled with reflection, but also with warmth, connection, and purpose.
Under clear skies and sunshine, the group walked together not only to honour Matthew’s memory but to support a cause that is making a real difference. The atmosphere was one of unity and support, reminding us all of the power of community during the most difficult times.
Harry shared why this cause means so much:
“Myself and my friends took part in a sponsored walk from Robin Hood’s Bay to Whitby Abbey and back. We sadly lost a dear friend recently. He wasn’t just a friend, he was a son, a partner, and heartbreakingly, a dad.
We are raising this money for Checkmate, a men’s mental health hub. Checkmate exists to bring men together and start conversations around mental health. Through exercise and social events, we create supportive spaces where men can connect, talk, and feel less alone.
Having lost loved ones to mental health struggles, this cause is deeply personal to us. While we know our events won’t fix everything, they can be the first step, helping someone open up, change how they feel, and realise support is there.
Every donation helps us run more events, reach more men, and continue spreading awareness. Thank you for supporting Checkmate and helping us make a difference.”
We are incredibly proud of Harry and everyone who took part in the walk. Their efforts are a powerful reminder of how important it is to look out for one another and to keep conversations around mental health open and ongoing.
At KEITS, we are committed to supporting not just the professional development of our learners, but their wellbeing too. Matthew will always be remembered as part of our community, and we hope that through continued awareness, support, and kindness, we can help make a difference for others who may be struggling.
If this blog resonates with you, we encourage you to reach out, check in on those around you, and support organisations like Check Mate that are working tirelessly to create safe spaces for men to talk.
