Dog Grooming Apprentice now a Business Owner

Dog Grooming Apprentice now a Business Owner, let's hear from Leah!

Let’s here from Leah, a previous KEITS dog grooming apprentice:

“I completed my dog grooming apprenticeship with KEITS in 2020, which was a really pivotal time for me. Training during the Covid pandemic definitely came with its challenges, but it also pushed me to become more adaptable and determined early on in my career. The support and foundation I gained through my apprenticeship gave me the confidence to take the next steps.

After qualifying, I went on to open my own business, Grooming by Leah. Starting out on my own was a big leap, but it’s been incredibly rewarding to build something that reflects my style and standards. Over time, I’ve developed a real passion for Asian fusion grooming, particularly specialising in Shih Tzu’s, a breed I absolutely love working with and have been able to refine my skills around.

A big part of my journey has been continuing to learn from some of the best groomers in the industry. I’ve invested a lot of time into further education, including travelling to events in the UK and internationally like Groomania in Belgium. I was able to watch and learn from some of the top groomers in the world. Experiences like that have been incredibly inspiring and have pushed me to keep improving my work.

Over the past few years, I’ve also stepped into the competition world, which has been such an exciting part of my journey. Most recently, I had the opportunity to compete at Crufts in the first ever Royal Kennel Club Grooming Championships, which felt like a huge milestone and something I’m really proud of. Competing has pushed me creatively and technically, and has helped me grow massively as a groomer.

Alongside running my business and competing, I’ve also built an online presence where I share my work and connect with other groomers and dog owners. Through this, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with brands including Christies, Tuft, and now Peanut and Pickle, which has been an amazing part of growing my career.

I’ve also started delivering grooming seminars to help other dog groomers too. Being able to share knowledge and help other groomers develop their skills and confidence is incredibly rewarding.

For anyone considering an apprenticeship in dog grooming, I would highly recommend it. It’s such a hands-on way to learn, and it gives you real experience in the industry from the very beginning. My advice would be to stay curious, keep learning, and not be afraid to put yourself out there, whether that’s entering competitions, further training, or eventually starting your own business.”

Leah, you are a true example of why apprenticeships are so brilliant, and we wish you all the luck in the world with your business!
