At KEITS Training Services, we are proud to support learners at every stage of their career, including those already operating at the highest levels of the industry.
Luke, currently working as a Deputy Head of Chelsea Football Club’s training ground, began his journey in sports turf management at just 19 years old as an apprentice at a multi-use sports complex in Surrey. During this time, he completed his Level 2 qualification in Sports Turf, building a strong foundation in the industry while gaining valuable hands-on experience.
Following this, Luke progressed into the team at Fulham FC, working across both stadium and training ground settings as part of a small, dedicated team. It was here he began his Level 3 qualification, although career progression at the time led him to pause his studies.
In 2013, Luke joined Chelsea FC, becoming part of a team responsible for maintaining an extensive portfolio of pitches, ranging from undersoil Hybrid to natural clay based upon a flood plan. This also included a world-renowned stadium surface during a highly successful era for the club across domestic and European competitions. Over more than a decade, he developed extensive technical knowledge and leadership skills, progressing through the ranks.
Four years ago, organisational changes presented Luke with the opportunity to step into an acting management role, overseeing a growing and evolving team. This position was made permanent in 2023 following a departmental restructure, recognising his leadership capabilities and commitment to excellence. He now helps lead a team of around 40 staff, fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and high performance.
Encouraged to return to formal education, Luke re-engaged with his Level 3 qualification in Sports Turf with KEITS Training Services. Reflecting on this decision, he highlights the significant personal and professional impact the course has had.
Through his studies, Luke has broadened his understanding of global best practices, strengthened his confidence in his own knowledge, and overcome previous self-doubt. The structure and support of the course have provided renewed motivation, particularly during the more challenging winter months, while also creating opportunities to learn alongside peers and share experiences as a team.
Luke’s journey is a powerful example of how continuous professional development can enhance not only technical expertise but also confidence and leadership, even for those already operating at the top of their field.
