Considered by some to be the greatest sporting event in the world The FIFA world cup kicked off last week, but not without its controversies.
Why is it so controversial?
It began with migrant worker exploitations and death of workers during the construction of the stadiums, roads and hotels. The treatment of the LGBTQ+ communities including a ban on same sex relationships which can lead to a prison sentence or even death by stoning. The inequality towards women including being unable to determine their own path in life and asking permission from a male guardian to make any life decision. The decision to not serve alcohol at the stadium venues which goes back on sponsorship contracts along. Countries have come out to speak in force about the political issues relating to the hosts, FIFA wrote a letter to every Team asking them to ‘just focus on the football’
England’s Harry Cane said they would be wearing the One Love armband in support of the LGBTQ+ community but this was abandoned after FIFA issued a statement to say, if they did, they would automatically be given yellow cards.
