What is a covering letter?
A covering letter is an introduction of yourself to the employer as well as giving you a chance to explain why you would be a good fit for the role.
What should a covering letter contain?
Before you apply for any job, make sure you have done your research about the role you are applying for and the company that you are applying to work for.
The key points a covering letter should include;
- a small introduction of yourself
- name the role you are applying for
- the reasons you would be good at the role
- include a brief overview of your previous experience
- why this role interests you
- why you like their company
- Conclusion and sign off
An example of a covering letter could be as below;
Dear (insert the name of the person on the job advert)
My name is (insert name) and I am excited to apply for (insert job role) at (insert company name). I have (insert number of years/months) experience in (insert work experience) which I feel will help me in this role as I have (insert skills that are beneficial for the role).
This role appeals to me as (insert reasons) and your company (insert reason for wanting to work for this company).
Thank you for taking the time to read my application and CV. I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

What should it not contain?
It is important to check your covering letter for any spelling or grammar mistakes this includes not using any slang or abbreviations.
Do not give too much information in the covering letter, it needs to be short and concise with just key pieces of information. It is also important to not exaggerate or lie on your CV or covering letter or make any negative comments about your previous employer etc.
Your covering letter needs to be individualised to each application and role you are applying to show the potential employer you have a genuine interest.
