9 ways to enhance your apprentices learning

Apprentices offer a great opportunity for a business to build a pool of talent that could be the future of your organisation. Read our ideas on a few ways you can enhance the experience of learning for your apprentice and ultimately your business.

Apprenticeships offer a steppingstone for people to start their dream career. It is important for apprentices to get the most out of their apprenticeship to set them on a good career path. It is also important to consider that the apprentice could be the future of your business so it is important that the learning they receive not just meets the requirements but also offers experiences that build their confidence and independence.

We have put together a few tips on how to enhance an apprentice’s experience in your business.

Whole company engagement

It is important that the whole company is engaged in supporting the apprentice. The apprentice will benefit greatly from being accepted by the whole team and feeling they are part of the group.

Promote communication

Communication between the supervisor and apprentice is vital.  Regular sessions to discuss current schedules, progress on training and skills and knowledge ensure that all parties understand how it is going. It is also important that along with progress, any issues that may have arisen can be discussed and ensure any necessary support is offered.

Mentoring

A mentor can be the key to helping an apprentice to feel supported.  By giving them a ‘first contact’ they will have someone they can go to if they need help resolving any work or training questions  and if they have any personal issues they will hopefully feel they comfortable to get advice or support. Mentoring is also important as it provides the apprentice with ‘a guide’ on behaviours and attitudes in the workplace as well as supporting with their learning.

Work shadowing

It is important to offer work shadowing experiences for new tasks. This enables the apprentice to fully understand the process of completing the task. After that they can ‘have a go’ whilst being observed and if confident they can then complete the task on their own with regular monitoring from their trainer.

Goal setting/targets

Goal setting or setting small targets for the apprentice to achieve will help them to see progression of their learning. It will help them to maintain their motivation, gives their learning focus and helps to measure their success.

Feedback

It is important that opportunities for feedback are given. This is where the regular sessions to get together are key as this will enable the employer to give feedback on the apprentices performance including what they have done well and what improvements need to be made.

Give Responsibility

By giving the apprentice small tasks they can be responsible for and build on, they will be able to ‘put into practice’ the skills they have learned and will feel an integral part of the team. This assists in boosting their confidence and building independence. It will also support the business as it will enable more senior members of the team to be able to take on other more complicated tasks.

Celebrating successes

By celebrating even the smallest of successes will help the apprentice to feel their learning and progression is being noticed. It also gives the workplace a good, supportive atmosphere by lifting morale for the team who celebrate each other’s successes.

Clear progression

It helps both apprentice and business if there is clear progression for an apprentice. By documenting their plan for learning and progression in their role they will have a clear idea of what is expected of them and in what timeframe. If they exceed or stick to the plan, they will feel proud of themselves, and it will support in building their confidence and self-belief.
