About this opportunity:

One of the constituent Colleges of the University of Cambridge, King’s is world-famous and iconic with an outstanding academic record. We have around 200 non-academic staff, as well as approximately 130 teaching Fellows and around 650 students. Integral to our success is the work of our staff, and this includes our team of Gardeners who look after the extensive lawns, gardens and grounds, parts of which date back to the 1600s. The College grounds are open to the public and the Fellows’ Garden is usually open as part of the National Gardens Scheme.

We are seeking a keen Apprentice Gardener to join our Gardens team.

Responsible to the Head Gardener, the purpose of the role is to carry out the highest possible standard of mowing and horticultural work in the College grounds.

This will include:

  • Cutting and laying turf and the maintenance of lawns;
  • Maintenance of garden features such as paths, ponds and borders;
  • Disease and pest control activities;
  • Maintaining records of work carried out;
  • Ensuring that all tools, plant and machinery are maintained;
  • Ensuring that safe methods of working are always applied.

The ideal candidate will be conscientious, hardworking and reliable.  You should also be committed to producing work of a high standard and be able to work as part of a team and with minimum supervision when required.

A knowledge of plants, mowing techniques and first aid is desirable, the willingness to learn about these areas of work is essential.

Hours:

37.5 per week.  – Monday to Friday

8am – 5pm during summer months

8am – 4pm during winter months

  • Some experience of operating and maintaining garden machinery (desirable, training will be given)

Training:

  • Full training to be provided by the employer and KEITS at the place of employment.
  • The applicant will be working towards a Level 2 Horticulture and Landscape Operative Apprenticeship.
  • The learner will be allocated an industry specific training consultant who will provide both remote and on site visits throughout the apprenticeship.
  • The apprentice will work towards an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of their apprenticeship.
  • Depending on which apprenticeship pathway your employer chooses to offer within horticulture. You may also need to achieve all or a combination of the following courses before taking your end point assessment: Level 3 award in Emergency First Aid at Work, Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides Guidance, Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides and Abrasive Wheel.
