The highlight of my apprenticeship was being awarded a distinction for my work and assessments. Becoming a qualified keeper is an incredible milestone, and I’m thrilled to now feel like a valued member of the team. I’m also delighted to have recently secured a full-time position at the Trust, allowing me to continue developing my skills and contributing to the team in a permanent role.
Over the past two years, I’ve gained confidence and competence across all seven sections of the park. Whether it’s covering for a colleague or speaking to visitors, I feel well-equipped for any challenge. Public speaking, in particular, has been a huge area of personal growth for me. Initially, I stayed behind the scenes, but now I regularly engage with visitors, and I even aspire to commentate on shows in the future.
A standout moment for me was presenting at the BIAZA Bird Working Group Conference about box training with Burdock, a Turkey Vulture at the Trust. Public speaking was something I once found overwhelming, so being awarded the Golden Budgie Award for the most enjoyable presentation was a significant achievement and a testament to how far I’ve come.
I wholeheartedly recommend apprenticeships to anyone considering a career in this field. They’re not just for school leavers—at 21, I started my journey, and it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Apprenticeships offer a perfect blend of hands-on experience and theoretical learning, equipping you with a well-rounded skill set.
Looking Forward
What I love most about my job is its variety. One day I might be holding a golden eagle for a vet check, and the next, I’m flying black kites and catapulting food into the sky! Working with critically endangered species and contributing to their conservation is a privilege, and sharing these stories with visitors to inspire care for wildlife is deeply rewarding.
I am currently training Stilton a Steppe Eagle, who is new to our collection but an older experienced bird and I am really enjoying working with him. I am also learning to fly a falcon which is a more challenging skill to learn, but I am thoroughly enjoying the challenge.
