
A Sports Turf Operative or Groundsperson is responsible for the maintenance, renovation and preparation of one or more sports turf surfaces, in accordance with the needs of the particular sport. It is their job to maintain a playing surface to the performance quality standards appropriate to the sport being played.
Working in the outdoor environment is a healthy and therapeutic activity, which contributes to the well-being of employees as well as users of sports surfaces.

Course Content
The Sport Turf Operative Standard comprises of 10 core topic areas which will cover both knowledge and skills:
- Environmental and health and safety legislation and impact
- Policy compliance
- Application and use of tools, materials and machinery
- Identification and understanding of grasses, soil types, weeds, pests and diseases
- Impact of weather, ground conditions and usage
- Surface performance quality standards
- Monitoring, recording and reporting
- Plant science
- Marking out areas in line with Governing Body regulations
- Drainage and irrigation
The apprentice will also develop Core Behaviours including safety orientation, positive work ethic, quality focus, team player, contributor to sustainability.

Delivery Method
The Sports Turf Operative Standard is delivered using a blended learning methodology which includes both face to face visits and remote training sessions. The apprenticeship will finish with an End Point Assessment (EPA) assessed by an Independent External Assessor (IEPA). The EPA is sector specific and may involve practical assessments, written tests, professional discussions and review of evidence.
Expected Duration
Up to 17 months with a minimum of 12 months
