Babraham Research Campus Ltd (BRCL) is the company that manages and develops the Campus, supporting and promoting the regional and UK bioscience ecosystem. It has responsibility for the administration and commercial development of the site for the benefit of all Campus companies. The Campus provides emerging and growing biotech companies laboratory and office space together with access to outstanding scientific facilities in an ideal geographical location at the core of the Cambridge cluster. We are situated on an attractive 430-acre estate, seven miles south west of Cambridge City Centre. The campus blends modern laboratory facilities with historic buildings in a spacious, beautifully landscaped setting. The campus offers the companies excellent amenities: fully-equipped meeting rooms and conferencing facilities, bar, coffee shop and refectory, a sports and social club, gym, tennis court and football pitch. A large component of the estate grounds including the wood, grass, grazing meadows and park land are opened for both the campus and the wider community to walk through and use.

The post holder will be working within a team who are responsible for maintaining and managing the formal gardens and landscape of the campus, ensuring that a complete maintenance service to the Estate is provided to the Babraham Research Campus.  This is an Apprentice role and the Company would support training and development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide seasonal maintenance of the estate in accordance with the programme of works as directed by the Head gardener and developed from the management plan.
  • Working under guidance to carry out tasks to include (but not exclusively) grass cutting, weeding, planting, watering, leaf collecting, hedge cutting.
  • Use and maintenance of a range of garden and grounds machinery (e.g. ride-on, walk-behind mowers, tractors etc.) as necessary and undertaking of specialist training where required.
  • Formative and rejuvative maintenance of deciduous and evergreen trees, shrubs, climbers and hedges
  • To support line management in maintaining health and safety in the grounds and gardens to ensure the safety of staff and visitors.
  • Maintenance of hard landscaped areas, roads and pathways
  • As and when required, assist the Estates Team with the collection of waste
  • During the winter months (November – March) the post-holder will be required to be on-call in order to respond to adverse weather conditions. Duties whilst on call, will include: snow clearing and salting/gritting on paths, car parks, roads and building access areas as and when required
  • To carry out any other reasonable management request.

  • Good communication skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • GCSE’s, or equivalents in maths and English are desired but not essential.
  • Applicant must not already hold a level 2 or higher in horticulture.
  • Current valid and full driving licence.

Future Prospects

  • Potential to apply for Gardening (or other) positions if available.

Training

  • Full training to be provided by the employer and KEITS at the place of employment.
  • The applicant will be working towards and gain a Level 2 Horticulture and Landscape Operative Apprenticeship.
  • The learner will be allocated an industry specific training consultant who will provide both remote and on site visits throughout the apprenticeship.
  • The apprentice will work towards an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of their apprenticeship.
  • You will also need to achieve Level 3 award in Emergency First Aid at Work and Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides Guidance or Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides before undertaking the End Point Assessment.

Things to consider

  • Need to be physically fit for working outdoors and lifting products.
