About this opportunity:

Your Horsemanship has been established for over 25 years. Director, Jason Webb, has gained an excellent reputation for starting young horses under saddle and re-educating horses with severe behavioural and ridden issues from our centre in Goudhurst, Kent. With training methods evolved from his Australian roots, Jason’s program is highly sought after by international riders from all disciplines, studs and recreational riders alike. With between 10-14 horses in for starting or re-education at any time, plus a small Australian Stock Horse stud on site, Jason and Head Trainer, Hamish Gillanders, are supported by a team of two full time and four part-time staff. Your Horsemanship also runs a busy diary of on-site and off-site lessons, clinics, camps and demonstrations, including running stands and presentations at prestigious equine events. These areas of the business are supported by our comprehensive online horse training resource, where members can access our horse training program in addition to the “Problem Solving Library” and regular demonstrations, Q&A’s and webinars.

You will be supporting our Horse Trainers, yard and office staff with varied roles within the business. This will be primarily yard work including mucking out, feeding, grooming, field and yard maintenance, tack cleaning, tacking up and untacking and washing down, in addition to some groundwork training.  There will be opportunities to be involved in running our events, helping with marketing and social media and liaising with clients. There is the potential for some ridden work for the right candidate.

The role will include the following daily yard duties but not limited to;

  • Daily handling of young horses and those with behavioural issues
  • Feeding up, haying and making feeds
  • Mucking out
  • Rugging and unrugging
  • Putting horses on the horsewalker, turning out and bringing in
  • Yard and field maintenance and poo picking
  • Grooming
  • Tacking up, untacking and washing down
  • Horse care and administration of veterinary/ medication etc
  • Handling of broodmares, foals and youngstock
  • Tack Cleaning

The role will also include elements of;

  • Liaising with clients
  • Helping with marketing, filming, social media
  • Helping with stock taking, purchasing, ordering

As an apprentice, you will also learn;

  • Groundwork with young horses
  • How to handle and work with young horses and those with behavioural issues
  • Opportunities to ride for the right candidate

Desired Qualifications

  • Maths and English GCSE 4/C or equivalent desired but not essential.
  • If you already hold a level 2 in horse care you may be considered for a level 3.

Future Progression

  • Some learners have stayed on as grooms, or progressed into horse training. Others have gone on to work in full time employment in competition yards, or other roles within the equestrian industry.

Training

  • Full training to be provided by the employer and KEITS at the place of employment.
  • The applicant will be working towards and gain a Level 2 Equine Groom Apprenticeship
  • The learner will be allocated an industry specific training consultant who will provide both remote and on site visits throughout the apprenticeship.
  • The apprentice will work towards an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of their apprenticeship

  • The apprentice will be working to build a portfolio of evidence and will be required to pass a knowledge test and an End Point Assessment (EPA) to complete the apprenticeship.
  • A level 3 Senior Equine Groom would be considered if you already hold a level 2 in Equine or have a higher level of equine experience.
  • Ideally we would like someone local but there is accommodation for the right candidate. We also have space for 1 horse.
  • We have had a number of apprentices who have gone on to have excellent careers within the equestrian industry, from professional horse trainers to head grooms in top competition yards. This includes Hamish Gillanders, who is now our Head Trainer after running his own successful horse training business for three years after his apprenticeship.
  • We provide a unique apprenticeship experience, as we work with a wide range of horses from 3yo dressage stallions in for starting under saddle, to rescue ponies looking to be rehabilitated. With most horses staying for 6-8 weeks, there is a high turnover of horses and owners to work with, providing an incredible learning opportunity for those starting their career in the equestrian industry.
