Horticulture and Landscape Operative Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard
A Horticultural Operative may be required to carry out a range of tasks including planting, plant propagation and maintenance, in a variety of situations such as parks, gardens and urban landscapes. A Landscape Operative will be engaged in the construction of gardens and landscapes. This involves the construction of planted areas including lawns and ornamental plants and features such as paths, patios, ponds, walls and fences.
Working in the outdoor environment is a healthy and therapeutic activity, which contributes to the well-being of employees and users of gardens.

The skills developed during this apprenticeship can used in a variety of work roles, including the following:
- Gardener, visitor attractions, such as National Trust properties and botanic gardens
- Plant propagator, wholesale plant production business
- Garden Centre operative
- Local authority gardener
- Landscape operative, Landscape construction business
Course Content
The Horticulture Operative and Landscape Operative Standard comprises the following topic areas, which include both knowledge and skills:

- Planting, plant growth and development
- Application and use of tools, materials and machinery
- Vegetation control
- Biosecurity
- Plant identification
- Soil science
- Plant health

- Soil cultivation
- Site presentation
- Landscape construction
- Maintenance of hard surfaces
The apprentice will also develop Core Behaviours including safety orientation, customer care, learning effectively, positive attitude and decision making.

Delivery Method
The Horticultural Operative and Landscape Operative Standard is delivered using a blended learning methodology which includes both face to face visits and remote training sessions. The apprenticeship will finish with an End Point Assessment (EPA) assessed by an Independent External Assessor (IEPA). The EPA is sector specific and may involve practical assessments, written tests, professional discussions and review of evidence.
Expected Duration
Up to 17 months with a minimum of 12 months.
