Equine Groom Apprentice

About this opportunity:

Cindy Llewellyn is a partner of Downgate Farm LLP Livery, and runs a small livery yard based at her home. This is a quiet, private yard for the family’s own horses and has some spaces available for livery. Cindy & her Team have a wealth of experience and are very keen to share their knowledge with the right applicant.

The 5* facilities at Downgate Farm near Heathfield which are covered by 24 hour cctv include:

  • A large, airy American Barn, each horse has its own front and back top door.
  • A covered 5-horse walker
  • A separate surfaced and enclosed lunge pen
  • A 500m x 1.5m sand trot/canter track
  • Individual turnout paddocks – Secure alarmed tack rooms, solarium and wash bay
  • Excellent off-road hacking
  • A 25 x 60m wax surfaced school with dressage boards, show jumps, XC type fences.
  • A solarium wash bay perfect for washing down and keeping the horses clean and tidy.

A small team of experienced staff ensure that all the horses at Downgate Farm receive the best care possible. In addition to this, Cindy has access to the very best vets and farriers in the country, so along with 24-hour on-site supervision you can relax knowing your horse is in safe hands.

Duties include:

  • Mucking out
  • Yard duties
  • Turning out
  • Tacking up
  • Assisting at competitions
  • Feeding
  • Assisting with young stock
  • Handling and care of competition horses
  • Helping with Livery clients/ horses

Desired skills

  • Due to the standard of horses, the successful applicant MUST have had some previous experience with working with horses and some riding experience as well, include this in their application and be keen to further their knowledge and experience in both areas.
  • Good customer service skills are needed

Desired qualifications

  • English and maths GCSE’s, or equivalents, are desired.
  • If applicants already hold a level 1 in horse care is desired.
  • Applicants must not already hold a level 2 or higher in Horse Care to be eligible.

Training

  • Full training to be provided by the employer and KEITS at the place of employment.
  • The applicant will be working towards and gain a Level 2 Equine Groom Apprenticeship
  • The learner will be allocated an industry specific training consultant who will provide both remote and on site visits throughout the apprenticeship.
