The Equine Groom is an integral part in the life of the horse, providing essential day-to-day care. They will be involved with feeding, grooming, cleaning equipment, handling, preparing, exercising the horses and carrying out routine yard duties.
The Equine Groom may also be required to assist with the preparation of, transport to and care for horses at competitions, the races, sales, shows and other public appearances.

- Rescue/Rehabilitation Centre
Course Content
The Equine Groom Standard comprises of seven core topic areas in which both knowledge and skills will be covered:
- Safe Working Practices
- Yard and Field Routines and Duties
- Horse Anatomy, Physiology and Welfare
- Horse Handling, Care and Appearance
- Saddlery and Equipment
- Travelling Horses
- Non-Ridden Exercise
There are FIVE specialised routes for the employer and the apprentice to select from to suit job role and responsibilities:
- Breeding
- Driving
- Racing
- Riding
- Non-Riding
The apprentice will also develop Core Behaviours including safe working, work ethics, responsibility, teamwork and communication.

Delivery Method
The Equine Groom Standard is delivered using a blended learning methodology which includes both face to face visits and remote training sessions. The apprenticeship will finish with an End Point Assessment (EPA) assessed by an Independent External Assessor (IEPA). The EPA is sector specific and may involve practical assessments, written tests, professional discussions and review of evidence.
Expected Duration
12 -18 months with a minimum of 12 months
