About this opportunity:

The yard is managed by Sarah Gairdner, a Level 3 BE coach and Youth Coach for the Eastern Region as well as being a BHS reg instructor. Sarah produces and competes her own and owners’ horses up to advanced level. This career pathway has given her a wealth of experience which is evident in the fact that several of her homebred horses are those she has ridden at the highest levels. Sarah is passionate about horses and this shines through daily in the way she works, trains and cares for the horses in her care. This, along with her attention to detail and sympathetic approach, enables her to consistently produce youngsters that go on to have much success in their working lives.

Duties include:

  • Routine yard and field duties, mucking out, field and yard maintenance, watering, feeding, tidying, cleaning.
  • Handling horses: turning out and bringing in from the fields, taking on and off the horse walker, washing off, grooming, tacking up.
  • Handling tack and equipment, rugging up, cleaning tack.
  • Assisting, as required, during sports science specialists’ visits eg vet, farrier, physio & dentist.
  • Working with professionals visiting the yard – who all play a vital role in the horses development.
  • Assisting with competition preparation and travelling.
  • Opportunities to groom and attend competitions and events throughout the year.
  • Riding duties will depend on applicant. This will to be discussed at interview, but for the right person there could be the opportunity to hack, canter & school horses, if you are a competent and capable rider.

  • Applicant MUST HAVE previous experience with horses and show this on application.


  • GCSE’s Grade 4/C or higher desired
  • If applicants already hold a level 2 in horse care, this employer will consider a level 3 advanced equine apprentice for the right candidate.

  • Full training to be provided by the employer and KEITS at the place of employment.
  • The applicant will be working towards and gain a Level 2 Equine Groom Apprenticeship
  • The learner will be allocated an industry specific training consultant who will provide both remote and on site visits throughout the apprenticeship.
  • The apprentice will work towards an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of their apprenticeship.

Thing to Consider:

  • The apprentice will be working to build a portfolio of evidence and will be required to pass a knowledge test and an End Point Assessment (EPA) to complete the apprenticeship.
